5.2 Richard ê 形影: 看著 ná 外人

Che, tī 伊緊速 掀冊頁 ê 時, 意外 得著證實, he 是 一張批. 是 兩个 大漢後生, Edward kap Edmund, 寫 hō͘ in 老爸 ê 批.

彼時 in tī Ludlow 城堡 受教育, tī Easter 彼禮拜 拜六, in 央一个 欲轉去 ê 信差, William Smyth, 大聲埋怨 家庭老師 ê “可惡,” koh 求 in 老爸 著聽 信差 講分明, 因為 伊 完全知影 in 受迫害 ê 細節. 

這張 救命批 (S.O.S) 起頭 kap 結尾 lóng 寫 kah 真恭敬, 合 禮儀規矩, 但 批 ni̍h 講起 雖罔 老爸 有寄衫來, 毋過 袂記得 in ê Ji̍t-khò Keng (日課經, breviary), án-ne 煞 小可失去 批 ê 恭敬氣氛.

盡責 ê Payne-Ellis Sc 附有 一張批 ê 參考資料 (看是 Cotton ê 一份手稿), chŏaⁿ 伊 bānx 掀, 欲揣 較濟資料. 事實證據 才是 警察 ê 好料.

伊無 揣著啥 新 ê, 毋過 伊看著 一幅 家庭畫面, hō͘ 伊 停一睏.

毋過, 上蓋 hō͘ 她 掛心 ê 是 Edmund. Edmund 17 歲, 真瘦抽, 真茈, 真荏, 對這場 頭擺出征 充滿驕傲 kap 激動. 她想欲 kā 翁婿 講: “著照顧 Edmund,” 毋過 她 講袂出喙. 

姻翁袂當理解; á Edmund, 若 起懷疑, 將會受氣. 既然干焦 加伊 1 歲 ê Edward, 這時 會當 tī Wales 邊境 指揮 ka-tī ê 軍隊, 若 án-ne, 伊, Edmund, 閣較早 tō 應該 親身體驗 戰爭 ah lah.

她看 後面 hit 3 个 綴她 出來 ê 細囝: Margaret kap George 這 2 个 勇健, 白 phaux, koh 一个 總是 慢 in 一跤步 ê, ná 抾來 ê Richard; 伊 ê 烏目眉, 棕色頭毛, hō͘ 伊 看起來 ná 像是 外人. 

善良, làu-chhe̍h ê Margaret kō͘ 14 歲 少女 ê 熱情 澹濕 眼神 看 che 一切; George 干焦 11 歲, che 莊嚴 ê 軍事時刻 無 伊 ê tī-tāi, 表現出 激烈 ê 怨妒 kap 狂野 ê 反叛. 瘦身 ê 細漢 Richard 根本無 表現激情, 毋過 in 老母 認為, 伊 teh 顫, ná 像 一粒 khinx 拍 ê 鼓.

Hit 3 匹馬 馬蹄聲 tix ta̍tx, 裝備聲 tinx tiangx, 行出厝埕, kap 等 tī 路 ni̍h ê 僕人 會合. 囡仔 喝聲, 跳動, koh 擛手, 送 in 出 莊園 ê 大門.

Cicely, 已經看過 chēx 查埔人 kap chēx ka-tī ê 厝內人 上戰場, 轉來到 厝內, 胸坎 硩一个 袂慣勢 ê 沉重. In 中間 佗一人, 一个 真毋甘願 ê 聲音 án-ne 講, in 中間 佗一人 袂倒轉來 ah?

她 ê 所想 猶無達到 彼个 殘酷 ê 事實: in 無一人 會得 活著轉來. 她永遠 to 袂得 koh 看著 其中 任何一人.

Tī 這年 結束進前, 姻翁婿 被剁落 ê 頭 將 hông 戴 侮辱 ê 紙王冠, 掛 tī York ê 大城門 Micklegate Bar 頂, á 姻兄哥 kap 姻後生 ê 頭掛 tī 其他 兩个城門. //

Hmh, he [Cicely 所想 ê] káⁿ 是 虛構 ê, 但是 he [批 kap 送別場面] mā 指出 Richard ê 一个形影: 金頭毛 家庭 唯一 ê 棕色頭毛. “看著 ná 外人.” “Ná 抾來 ê.”

5.2

This was borne out unexpectedly when, spurting the pages from under his thumb, he came on a letter. It was a letter from the two elder boys, Edward and Edmund,[Pg 62] to their father. /

The boys were at Ludlow Castle, undergoing their education, and on a Saturday in Easter week, taking advantage of a courier who was going back, they burst out in loud complaint of their tutor and his ‘odiousness’ and begged their father to listen to the tale of the courier, William Smyth, who was fully charged with the details of their oppression. /

This S.O.S. was introduced and ended in respectful padding, the formality of which was a little marred by their pointing out that it was nice of him to send the clothes but that he had forgotten their breviary.

The conscientious Miss Payne-Ellis had given the reference for this letter (one of the Cotton manuscripts, it appeared) and he thumbed more slowly, in search of more. Factual evidence was a policeman’s meat.

He could not find any, but he came on a family tableau which held him for a moment.

The Duchess moved out into the thin sharp sunlight of a London December morning, and stood on the steps to watch them go: her husband, her brother, and her son. Dirk and his nephews brought the horses into the courtyard, scattering the pigeons and the fussing sparrows from the cobbles. /

She watched her husband mount, equable and deliberate as always, and thought that for all the emotion he showed he might be riding down to Fotheringhay to look at some new rams instead of setting out on a campaign. Salisbury, her brother, was being Nevill and temperamental; a little conscious of the occasion and living up to it. She looked at them both and smiled in her mind at them. /

But it was Edmund who caught at her [Pg 63]heart. Edmund at seventeen, very slender, very untried, very vulnerable. Flushed with pride and excitement at this setting-out to his first campaigning. She wanted to say to her husband: ‘Take care of Edmund,’ but she could not do that. /

Her husband would not understand; and Edmund, if he were to suspect, would be furious. If Edward, only a year older, was commanding an army of his own on the borders of Wales at this very minute, then he, Edmund, was more than old enough to see war at first-hand.

She glanced behind her at the three younger children who had come out in her wake; Margaret and George, the two solid fair ones, and behind them, a pace in the rear as always, her changeling baby, Richard; his dark brows and brown hair making him look like a visitor. /

Good-natured untidy Margaret watched with all the moist-eyed emotion of fourteen; George in a passionate envy and wild rebellion that he was only eleven and of no consequence in this martial moment. Thin little Richard showed no excitement at all, but his mother thought that he vibrated like a softly tapped drum.

The three horses moved out of the courtyard in a clatter of slipping hooves and jingling accoutrements, to join the servants waiting for them in the roadway, and the children called and danced and waved them out of the gate.

And Cicely, who in her time had seen so many men, and so many of her family, go off to war, went back to the house with an unaccustomed weight at her bosom. Which of them, said the voice in her unwilling mind, which of them was it who was not coming back?

[Pg 64]Her imagination did not compass anything so horrible as the fact that none of them was coming back again. That she would never see any one of them again.

That before the year was ended her husband’s severed head, crowned for insult with a paper crown, would be nailed above the Micklegate Bar in York, and the heads of her brother and her son on the two other gates.

Well, that might be fiction, but it was an illuminating glimpse of Richard. The dark one in a blond family. The one who ‘looked like a visitor’. The ‘changeling’.
